What Is a Smoke Label?

HMF Express doors and frames are suitable for smoke door applications when used with classified smoke and draft control components that bear the “S” mark and Category H smoke and draft control gaskets.

A smoke label (the “S” designation) is an auxiliary label applied in addition to the standard fire protection rating label. It applies to three-sided frames without transoms — including single swing, pairs, double egress pairs, and multiple opening frames.

The Key Rule: Smoke Labels Require a Fire Rating

The smoke label is an addition to the hourly fire rating — it means nothing without it.

A door or frame cannot be specified with a smoke label only. You must also provide the fire protection rating (20, 45, 60, or 90 minute) and then specify that the door or frame receive an auxiliary “S” smoke label. The smoke label alone does not make a door or frame compliant.

Glazing in Smoke-Labeled Assemblies

Door frames with lights (glass inserts) additionally require glazing materials classified as components in fire door assemblies complying with UL 10C. Standard glass does not meet this requirement — you must specify rated glazing.

Who Is Responsible?

Customers are wholly responsible for ensuring that all material provided meets building code requirements for smoke and draft control openings. HMF Express is responsible for communicating what requirements must be met for the label to be applicable and properly listed.

Smoke doors and frames receive an auxiliary “S” label from either UL or WHI (Intertek). When specifying, confirm which third-party certification is required by the project specification or the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).
